愛琴海之旅 (十九) 劇變造就成的美麗 — 聖多里尼島 Santorini (下)

         我在上一集裡提到過：聖多里尼島的西側，是陡峭高聳的火山口內壁。而島上的現代重要城鎮，也大都建在西岸。居高臨下的美麗海景，陡坡上的屋宇層疊，再加上當地政府對房屋外部顏色的規範，造就了許許多多宛如世外桃源的美麗鏡頭。

 

這些陡峭高聳的地形，也促成了聖多里尼的一些其他特色。例如說：它的首府 Fira 與其方的港口之間的交通，只能靠纜車和一條陡峻的步道。而這一條步道，則以觀光載客驢隊出了名。 即使這個所謂的「港口」，也因為地形的限制，只能停靠小型駁船。所以後來在其南方一段距離處，又開闢了一個稍大、而且可通車輛的港口。提到驢隊，就想到聽說在下坡時，如果你不慎從驢背上掉下來，聰明的驢子會趕緊把你丟下，揚長而去。

聖多里尼島上的幾個現代的市鎮。除了它位在西岸中點的首府 Fira之外，另外一個遊客更多的市鎮，是位於它西北岸的Oia。我們在島上的短短幾個小時，大部分都花在此一小鎮上。在此地，不論是遠眺，俯瞰、或是回顧市鎮的街坊屋宇，都充滿了令人難忘的美景。

當該回遊輪的時候快到的時候，我們搭車到Fira市的西側，搭乘纜車下到海面，再乘駁船回遊輪。就在駁船上，我們很幸運地看到了原來躲在另外一座島後方的夕陽美景。

 

            我想會有朋友好奇說：聖多里尼火山會再爆發嗎？答案是肯定的，只是時間早晚而已。從宏觀的角度來看：造成聖多里尼火山的根本原因、亦即非洲板塊和愛琴海板塊之間的相對運動，至今方興未艾，所以火山的火源依舊存在。再從微觀的角度來看：我在上一集裡提到過：「火山口中心附近的兩座小島，並不是當時爆發後殘留的，而是由在那次大爆發的一千多年以後的幾次小噴發的岩漿流，冷卻形成的」。光是從西元1900-1950年之間，火山口中間的小島，就有三次噴發。而在西元2011-2012年的遠距探測，也確認火山口中間的小島，表面曾經隆起十多公分，顯示其下方的岩漿室正再被充填。不過過去聖多里尼火山兩次大爆發之間的時距似乎不短，據粗略的估計大致在一萬年的數量級。所以我們這一代，見到這隻美麗的鳳凰重浴烈火的機會，應該很小。

Santorini - A Phoenix from a Fiery Birth, part 2

            As we have seen in the last part of this travel note, the steep terrain at the inner edge of Santorini Volcano’s caldera plays a major role in forming the world-famous scenery of Santorini Island.  This terrain also leads to some of Santorini’s unique features.  For instance, the capital city of Fira can only reach its port via a cable car or a winding and extraneous trail.  It is on this trail passes the well-known donkey ride.

            We spent most of our time in the village of Oia, which locates at the western shore near the northern end of the island.  Nonetheless, we did venture into the city of Fira to take the cable car down to the port and got ferried back to our cruise ship.  We were quite luck to capture a glimpse of beautiful sunset.

            Some people may wonder: Will Santorini Volcano erupt again?  The answer is “yes”.  In fact, there have been 9 eruptions since the first century AD, and 3 of these occurred in the first half of 20^th century.  However, they are of much smaller scale than the one in 16^th-15^th century BC.  It may take a long while before the volcano accumulates enough energy for another epic eruption.  In other words, fortunately to our comfort, during our lifetime this beautiful phoenix, the Santorini Island, is unlikely to get engulfed by flame again.
